چکیده

We present a theory of the Coulomb blockade for a tunnel junction, with arbitrarily large tunnel conductance but with small channel transmissions, placed in a general electromagnetic environment containing no island. Our model, based on a self-consistent calculation of the complex admittance of the junction, predicts that high tunnel conductances wash out the Coulomb blockade and restore Ohmic behavior. We find quantitative agreement between predictions and measurements of the dc conductance of small metallic tunnel junctions in series with a resistor. [S0031-9007(98)05514-8]

Interplay of Coulomb blockade and Aharonov-Bohm resonances in a Luttinger liquid

We consider a ring of strongly interacting electrons connected to two external leads by tunnel junctions. By studying the positions of conductance resonances as a function of gate voltage and magnetic flux the interaction parameter g can be determined experimentally. For a finite ring the minimum conductance is strongly influenced by device geometry and electron-electron interactions. In partic...

Mesoscopic tunneling magnetoresistance

We study spin-dependent transport through ferromagnet/normal-metal/ferromagnet double tunnel junctions in the mesoscopic Coulomb-blockade regime. We calculate the conductance in the absence or presence of spin-orbit interaction and for arbitrary orientation of the lead magnetizations. The tunneling magnetoresistance ~TMR!, defined at the Coulomb-blockade conductance peaks, is calculated and its...

Chapter 3 . Coulomb Blockade In Single And Double Quantum Dots

A few years ago, Professor Kastner's research group discovered that the conductance through a quantum dot weakly coupled to the leads shows periodic peaks as a function of the voltage on a gate electrode. 1 This behavior was attributed to the phenomenon of Coulomb blockade: to add an electron to the dot, the system must have an energy equal to the electrostatic energy of a dot charged by one el...

Strong Tunneling in the Single-Electron Transistor

We have investigated the suppression of single-electron charging effects in metallic single-electron transistors when the conductance of the tunnel junctions becomes larger than the conductance quantum e2yh. We find that the Coulomb blockade of the conductance is progressively shifted at lower temperatures. The experimental results agree quantitatively with the available 1yT expansion at high t...
